Troubleshooting adult ECMO.

چکیده
The following scenarios explore some of the common problems encountered during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in adults. In each scenario, the circuit is comprised of a centrifugal pump and a polymethylpentene oxygenator.

A review of the fundamental principles and evidence base in the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in critically ill adult patients.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) comprises a commonly used method of extracorporeal life support. It has proven efficacy and is an accepted modality of care for isolated respiratory or cardiopulmonary failure in neonatal and pediatric populations. In adults, there are conflicting studies regarding its benefit, but it is possible that ECMO may be beneficial in certain adult populations...
متن کاملExtracorporeal respiratory support in adult patients
In patients with severe respiratory failure, either hypoxemic or hypercapnic, life support with mechanical ventilation alone can be insufficient to meet their needs, especially if one tries to avoid ventilator settings that can cause injury to the lungs. In those patients, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is also very effective in removing carbon dioxide from the blood, can pro...
متن کاملCommon problems and troubleshooting on ECMO run
The technological advances in ECMO have changed to enhance safety, accessibility and facilitate its use, contributing to decreased morbidity and improved survival of patients requiring ECMO support. Major advances in ECMO deployment paralleled advances in conventional CPB including cannulas, pumps, oxygenator bubble detectors and heparin bonded circuits which decrease platelet activation, circu...
متن کاملAdult venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for severe respiratory failure: Current status and future perspectives
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for severe acute respiratory failure was proposed more than 40 years ago. Despite the publication of the ARDSNet study and adoption of lung protective ventilation, the mortality for acute respiratory failure due to acute respiratory distress syndrome has continued to remain high. This technology has evolved over the past couple of decades and has been ...
متن کاملDeveloping a simple preinterventional score to predict hospital mortality in adult venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
Despite gaining popularity, venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) remains a controversial therapy for acute respiratory failure (ARF) in adult patients due to its equivocal survival benefits. The study was aimed at identifying the preinterventional prognostic predictors of hospital mortality in adult VV-ECMO patients and developing a practical mortality prediction score to fa...
